It’s unclear what they are, but they could very plausibly be people…or aliens, as some players believe.

In a large canyon, facing a lake of lava, if you look up at the ridge to your left rather than at the chore of a level you face, you will see three mysterious figures at the top of the ridgeline. Shiverburn Galaxy in World 5 is a particularly difficult platformer level with lots of lava and ice (at the same time, of course). This cool easter egg has been hotly debated by fans. Old and new fans alike found this funny, but old fans were probably more in agreement with King Whomp than new, and were happy to get a few new words out of the guy for once.Ī huge not only easter egg, but mystery in Galaxy 2 is the Shiverburn Galaxy figures. If the player dies and comes back for a rematch, the Whomp King will start the dialogue, then say “Aargh! I’m tired of this speech!” and begin the fight immediately. If that weren’t reference enough, the Whomp King at the end of the level has the exact same dialogue as the one in Mario 64 before the player fights him. The level itself is organized almost exactly as the Whomp Fortress in Super Mario 64, the first 3D super Mario game. In a galaxy called…wait for it…”Throwback galaxy,” (real subtle, Nintendo) there is a level called “Return of the Whomp King.” Whomps, those giant stone walls with arms and legs that take joy in flattening Mario, are crawling on this planet, and as angry as ever. A more likely one is that this sign is a reference to Yoshi’s “space dragon” move in Super Smash Brothers. The note still tells Mario to check around the back of the house, but it is signed “Yoshi the space dragon,” rather than just “Yoshi.” There were a few theories as to what this meant, one being that Yoshi is not actually a dinosaur, but a dragon. Classic, old Mario songs will play when Mario is on them, calling back to Mario’s origins and the graphics which may have been the first time some players saw Mario.Īfter progressing a good bit in the game, going back to the third level in World 1 and reading the note left in front of Yoshi’s house could reveal a new message than the player found the first time. The first easter eggs most fans will find are little bonus levels in the shape of giant floating sprites from the oldest Mario games, made into their own little planet for Mario to adventure on. The graphics far surpass the games before it, the platforming is on another level, and the fun little references to the classical Mario games make every loyal, long-term fan feel at home. Super Mario Galaxy 2 is a precious game to many Mario fans.
